The European goldfinch was known to eat thistles and thorns, and so became a symbol of the cross of Christ. It appears in Renaissance paintings to refer to God’s great love for the nations of the world as demonstrated in sending his Son to become the Lamb of God to take away the sin of the world. When painters borrow one or more elements from previous paintings, it is considered a “quote.” Can you see the quote?
